Museum Tip: Banksy Museum!

At first, I didn’t really believe it. A museum in an industrial park in Amsterdam-West, between the fire station and a car wash. That can’t be any good, right? And what would they even have on display there by Banksy? A few posters or something. Probably just another tourist trap.

But the reviews are actually all good. So I decided to check it out anyway—and I was pleasantly surprised!

Of course, I’m familiar with Banksy’s famous works, but beyond that, I actually knew very little about this artist or this artist collective. In a large warehouse, you see an incredible number of replicas of Banksy’s work. I couldn’t believe my eyes, because I didn’t recognize most of the pieces. And I certainly had no idea that so much of his/her/their work is on display in Gaza and Ukraine.

The activism practically jumps off every drawing. Sometimes confrontational, often sharp.

On the one hand, it was a breath of fresh air to walk around in an almost empty museum, but at the same time I thought: this really deserves more visitors. Fortunately, more and more people are finding their way to the museum. They’ve also recently started collaborating with schools and hope to eventually be included in the Museumjaarkaart.

So: if you’re looking for something different to do, head to Slingelandtplein. I went there feeling pretty skeptical, but came away enthusiastic. 😉
